Your Black Friday Survival Guide
Your Black Friday Survival Guide

The unofficial start to the holiday shopping season is right around the corner, and experienced shoppers are already preparing for the big day. The Black Friday shopping frenzy may be puzzling to some, but others insist that the bargains and deep discounts are well worth the lost sleep and time spent standing in line. If this is your first year braving the crowds, you will need a survival plan to make it through. Planning ahead is essential. If you wait until Thanksgiving night to start making plans, you will probably come home disappointed and without the bargains you hoped for.

Shop Early

You may not have to get up in the middle of the night or stand in line for hours to score some great bargains. Retailers have been pushing the boundaries of the holiday season for years, and many Black Friday deals will be available before the turkey goes in the oven. A number of major retailers are opening on Thanksgiving this year, and others are offering special deals online. Now is the time to start scouting out the bargains. Even if you do not see deep discounts now, check back on Thanksgiving morning. You can shop while you baste the turkey and make the crust for your pumpkin pie. If you do it right, you might be able to sleep in the next morning.

Arm Your Phone

If you still plan to hit the stores on Black Friday, make sure you are prepared for the chase. A number of smartphone apps make comparing bargains easier - make sure you have them on your phone before you leave the house. You can also find spreadsheets and other comparison tools online to make your Black Friday experience easier and less stressful. With many Black Friday ads already online, there is no reason to head out unprepared. Spend a few hours going through each ad and picking out the bargains you want. Keep in mind that doorbuster deals are typically limited, so you may need to line up early to get them. Read the fine print to see how many of each item are actually available, then think about whether the discount is really worth it. Doorbuster deals typically offer the biggest discounts, but they are not guaranteed. You could miss out on other bargains while waiting in line for a deal that may or may not happen.

Make a Game Plan

You will need a solid game plan to snag the best Black Friday bargains. By now you should have a list of the items you want, the stores where they are located and the opening times for each retailer. Grouping your purchases within the same shopping center is ideal, but not always possible. Keeping your shopping excursion within a radius of a few miles will minimize your stress and maximize your chances of getting the bargains you really want. In past years stores often staggered their opening times, and that made it easier to travel from place to place in search of bargains. With so many stores opening at midnight, that strategy may no longer work. Many experienced Black Friday shoppers prefer to snag a central parking spot in their target shopping center, then move from store to store on foot. That may seem time-consuming, but the traffic on Black Friday is pretty insane. You will probably be able to walk across the parking lot in less time than it would take you to find a new parking space.

Safety First

Be sure to lock your car and keep your packages out of sight after each retail excursion. Black Friday brings out hordes of shoppers, but the holiday is also a prime time for burglars, pickpockets and other criminals. Keep a close eye on your wallet, purse, smartphone and other valuables. Have your keys in hand before you get to your car, place your bags in the trunk and double-check that your vehicle is locked before heading to the next store. Unload your car as soon as possible after your Black Friday adventure is over. You can safely leave your bags in the trunk if you park in a secure garage, but leaving your present-laden vehicle parked on the street or even in your driveway could be risky. After you have had a chance to unpack your vehicle and relax a bit, you can treat yourself and your family to a hearty breakfast. Think of it as a reward for surviving your first Black Friday shopping adventure.
