How to stretch your grocery dollars
It's challenging to save money in this day and age. Grocery prices have really gone up in recent years. You may be paying the same price for things like peanut butter as you were a couple of years ago, but the packages are getting smaller and smaller. Invariably, you are paying a lot more for a lot less. Besides doing the coupon deals and watching for sales in the local store flyer, there are some other things you can do to stretch your dollar.
One great tip is to go more vegetarian. Meat is very expensive, and it may not be all that healthy for you. If you eat more beans, you will be getting a lot of fiber plus protein, and you won't experience as much hunger. Cook with dry beans instead of the canned ones, and you will save more.
Another tip is to cook your meals from scratch. Make your own sauces and not buy them pre-made. You will have to invest in seasonings and spices, but in the long run it will be cheaper and healthier to make your meals this way.
When you do buy meat, buy it on sale. Also, purchase, for instance a whole chicken instead of a cut-up one. Again, there are more savings to be made doing it this way.
Buy staples that you can use in several different types of recipes such as diced tomatoes, chicken broth, beans, lentils, rice, and potatoes. They are usually inexpensive.
Buy staples from bulk bins as they will be less expensive.
Make several dishes out of the whole chicken. Use potatoes with it one night, rice the second and so forth. This will stretch the meat into several meals resulting in a lot of savings.
Plan your menus in advance. You can match dishes with ingredients that are on sale in the store.
Go through the freezer periodically. You may find frozen foods that you have forgotten about. It's good to utilize all your leftovers, so there is no waste.
Grow your own vegetables or buy from the local farmer's market. Even if you live in an apartment, you can grow vegetables in containers on your balcony. Your food will be fresh, and you will know that it was organically grown.
Join a co-op. Some have memberships that allow you to shop for food at discounted prices.
Shop Wednesday nights. Stores tend to lower prices on expiring items. Also toward closing, baked goods, produce and other cooked items will tend to be marked down for a quick sale.
There are many ways to save money on groceries. You can still eat well and healthy for a fraction of the price if you follow the tips.
