J. M. W. Turner was an English Romantic painter, known for his imaginative landscapes and turbulent marine paintings. Turner was born in London, and lived there all his life. He was a child prodigy, and studied at the Royal Academy of Arts from 1789, enrolling when he was 14, and exhibited his first work there at 21. He earned a steady income from commissions and sales, and opened his own gallery in 1804. Turner was a private and reclusive artist. He was inspired by shipwrecks, rain, fog and sunlight. Most well known for his paintings of the sea, he applied oil paint as he would watercolor, creating at atmospheric effect.
